1967 Chevrolet C10 Stepside Pickup

We see all kinds of vehicles in this business, and those that usually work best are the ones that haven’t been disassembled and fully restored. We’ve said it before, but it doesn’t matter how good you or your shop might be, they’re probably not as good as the factory. So when a vehicle like this no-nonsense 1967 Chevy C10 pickup shows up, well, we try to take into account the entire experience rather than just judging a book by its cover. It’s had just two owners, with the first keeping it for more than 50 years. It shows just 70,543 original miles. And aside from a few trim pieces and a repaint about 10 years ago, it’s entirely original. So before you dismiss it as inferior or “just a 6-cylinder” you should get to know it, because it’s unlikely you’ll find one that drives better than this.

Hunter Green always looks right on vintage pickups, giving them a purposeful but elegant look. The regular cab/stepside bed look is the one everyone wants simply because it has great proportions and those rounded rear fenders look muscular. There’s no denying that this is a great-looking truck. I guess the name “Action Line” is appropriate and these trucks are seeing massive gains in the market right now as enthusiasts come to realize that they not only look great, but they are great on the road, too. They were the first trucks Chevrolet really tried to make comfortable, giving them automobile-style features like a full coil spring suspension, low dashboard and hood line, and a long list of comfort and convenience options. This little pickup shows the results of an easy life—some surface scale underneath but no critical rot—floors and cab corners are excellent. The sheetmetal is arrow-straight and has never been bent in an accident or patched up after-the-fact, and the respray a few years ago shows that off to great effect. There’s a nice gloss to the paint, not too perfect, and it looks right on the vintage bodywork. The 1967 C10 is noteworthy because of its sloping hood line and lack of side marker lights, both of which make it the most highly-sought for today’s collectors. More recently, all the chrome on the front end was replaced, giving it a crisp, well-dressed look that’s appropriate. In 1967, the standard bed floor was still wooden planks, and while we didn’t cut any of them in half to count the rings, we’re pretty sure they’re original, too. If you want a clean Action Line pickup, this is a very good place to start.

The turquoise interior is entirely original, no question about it. Door panels, seat cover, and the heavy-duty rubber floor mat surely all date from 1967. Knowing that, they’re in great condition and there are no real needs inside if you like the bare-bones vibe. It’s actually kind of refreshing to see a vehicle with exactly zero options: heater and defroster, basic gauges, and, well, that’s it. Personally, I like that because it’s less stuff to break and in a hobby car, reliability is key to having fun. On the other hand, the whirring 6-cylinder engine makes such wonderful sounds that you may not miss a radio. The steering is light and easy to manage, so power steering isn’t really a must-have unless you weigh 98 pounds. And with clever ventilation, these trucks remain comfortable on warm days even without A/C. And I should probably tell you that the original owner who kept it for 50 years was a woman, so keep that in mind before you fret about power steering and A/C being things you just can’t live without. On the upside, everything works: lights, signals, horn, wipers, so the truck is 100% ready to enjoy and it asks for very little; maybe wipe it off now and then but otherwise just go out and drive. It’s already got all the battle scars its ever going to get, so why not own a truck that can earn its keep around the homestead?

The engine is a 250 cubic inch inline-6 and it runs beautifully. Add a little choke (it is manual, from the factory) and it fires right up and settles into a smooth 6-cylinder idle. There’s plenty of torque on tap to make it feel energetic around town and if you row the gears correctly, you’ll never feel like you are lacking in the horsepower department. It’s dressed in Chevy Orange paint and still retains its original air cleaner, downdraft carburetor, and other accessories. There’s plenty of evidence of recent maintenance, including a fresh tune up with plugs, wires, cap rotor, and all the usual stuff. Belts and hoses are recent and there’s a brand new battery as well. We really like the way this engine feels on the road, which is quite different than a V8, and to be honest, we’re not really finding ourselves wishing for more in this particular truck. That’s what being an honest original will get you.

Underneath it’s grungy, no question about that. But look past all the surface scale and dirt and you’ll see that the floors are solid, the cab has no rot issues, and the hardware is well-maintained and fully functional. This truck rides surprisingly well thanks to Chevy’s new rear suspension, which uses long control arms and coil springs to really smooth things out. The A-arm front suspension looks and acts like the suspension under an Impala, so this truck feels agile and comfortable, not brittle and crude. The 3-speed manual shifts nicely and clutch take-up is smooth, and with 3.73 gears in back, it feels punchy around town and still whisks down the highway at modern speeds. It’s so untouched that it even looks like it’s still wearing its original spiral shocks! The brakes have been recently rebuilt, including master cylinder and lines, so they feel strong and confident. And if you’re still fretting over what you think is rust, well, this probably isn’t your truck. But if you see a clean, solid pickup that can be used as-is or taken to the next level, you’re doing it right. The original wheels were recently refinished in basic black (they were probably white when they were new) and carry factory “dog dish” hubcaps and big 235/70/15 BFGoodrich radial tires.

There’s something to be said of a truck that asks for very little when it’s doing its job. You can still use this one for hauling and that would make any job fun. It’s certainly eye-catching and the unfiltered driving experience is really refreshing. Or perhaps you’re a visionary and see this clean pickup as the foundation of a spectacular fresh build—not having any expensive body work can save you a TON of money in the long run.
