1956 Oldsmobile 88 Sedan
Yes, this is exactly what it appears to be: a brand new 1956 Oldsmobile 88 sedan. It shows just 3607 original miles (that’s three thousand, six hundred and seven, and it is not a typo). It was purchased new in 1956 by a husband for his wife, who took ill shortly afterwards and was never able to drive it. Fourteen years later, after his wife’s passing, he offered it to the nurse who cared for her all those years, and when she politely declined, a young man who lived nearby bought it eagerly. In the following 50 years, it has been driven about 1000 miles, always maintained as an artifact of value, and remains in astounding original condition. Even the TIRES are original! If you want a time capsule, a glimpse into just how good GM cars were in the 1950s, or just the next preservation-class national prizewinner, this is most certainly it. It is one of the most remarkable things we’ve ever seen, and we’ve seen a lot.
Whenever a car like this comes through our doors, we spend a great deal of time and effort trying to confirm or deny its story. With a claim of just 3600 original miles, you know we inspected every square inch of this car to be sure we could make such a claim with a degree of certainty we wouldn’t need on, say, a car with 36,000 miles. In fact, we can find no evidence that this is not exactly what it is. The paint is factory Magic Mirror lacquer in high-gloss black, and you can forget sending us messages saying that factory paint was never that glossy. Here it is.
