1934 Ford 3-Window Coupe

Glance through our SOLD inventory and you’ll see that 1934 Ford coupes remain popular with enthusiasts. We’ve sold some spectacular steel cars that were very expensive, but now that we’ve spent some time with this handsome Mocha 1934 Ford 3-window coupe, we’re sort-of wondering what all the fuss is about when it comes to steel vs. fiberglass. They look the same, they drive the same, and unless you rap your knuckles on the side of the door, you probably can’t even tell what it’s made of. As a result, fiberglass cars like this represent a HUGE value compared to their steel counterparts. Same looks, same performance, less money? Sounds like a win!

Fortunately, this cool ’34 Ford carries an Gibbons Fiberglass body, one of the best names in the business. Even among the fiberglass body makers, there’s a definite pecking order and this is one of the best. The car feels robust, the doors close with authority, and everything fits together quite well. It was built several years ago, and while it was used as intend, we have to respect the workmanship that went into it because it’s still in fantastic condition even after more than 15,000 miles. The unusual Mocha paint is subtle, with a lot of gold and pearl in it, so it has a bit of a color-change effect depending on how the sun is hitting it—the lights in our studio don’t really do it justice. The unusual color certainly makes this car stand out in a crowd of red and black ones and it looks like a grown-up’s hot rod. The 3-piece hood is steel with cool cut-outs that act as vents to keep the small block V8 cool and give it a bit of a custom look that makes a statement. As I mentioned, fit and finish are quite good, although there are a few minor signs of use and age—nothing to be concerned about, but this isn’t a perfect, fresh, high-dollar build. Just get in and drive without worries, which is why we’re so fond of this particular car.

You’ll note this coupe carries a lot of cool details, including the large commercial-style headlights that always look best on a ’34, the cool little bumperettes under the grille for protection, and the smooth grille that includes an original-style Ford V8 emblem. We also like that they retained those beautiful Ford scroll-type exterior door handles, which are not only easier to use than door poppers, but are probably the most elegant design of the ‘30s. LED taillights that resemble 1939 Ford teardrop-style units are a nod to tradition and the running boards are covered in rubber so they’re functional rather than decorative. The car looks great from any angle and the chopped top profile is immediately recognizable from a distance.

The gorgeous caramel-colored interior is professionally finished, something that you don’t see very often on affordable rods. Someone usually just throws in some used seats from a late-model and cuts some old carpet to size, but this one is beautifully rendered and ready for a road trip. The doors open suicide-style, as they did in 1934, and the door panels are simple but neatly done with a design that is as subtle as the paint is brilliant. We like the contrast. Adjustable bucket seats are wrapped in handsome upholstery that’s durable and comfortable for long hauls, and there are automotive-grade carpets on the floor. The dash was painted to match the bodywork and filled with fresh white-faced TPI Tech instruments, as well as the controls for the Vintage Air HVAC system (fully operational, by the way) and power windows. Other features include a polished tilt steering column with a gorgeous banjo-style billet aluminum wheel, a Pioneer AM/FM/CD stereo head unit, and a vintage-looking wiper motor over the windshield header. There’s lots of sound insulation inside, so this rod is extremely comfortable for cruising and stays comfortable even on warm days. Be sure to check out the Ford script oval embossed on the headliner as well as the fully finished trunk with the battery in its own enclosure.

Mechanically, this ’34 Ford coupe totally nails it. The engine is a strong-running 350 cubic inch GM crate motor, which puts out a rather robust 290 horsepower and 380 pounds of torque. The hardware isn’t complex, but it’s bulletproof reliable and a lot of fun to drive. Up top there’s an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor on a Bowtie aluminum intake, and inside it offers four-bolt mains, a hydraulic cam, and a reasonable compression ratio so it offers good street manners on pump gas. Color-matched finned Mickey Thompson valve covers and a lot of chrome and polished aluminum dress things up, so you’ll want to show it off, and there really aren’t many signs of use under the hood. A giant Griffin aluminum radiator with an electric fan seems to shrug off warm weather and an HEI ignition system lights it up easily and reliably. Turn the key and this car fires every time, idles well, and really likes to hustle—that’s the benefit of buying a car that’s been sorted and driven.

Better yet, it’s backed by a 700R4 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission, which means effortless, quiet, comfortable cruising at any speed. Why are guys still using 3-speed TH350s again? This totally transforms the car. There’s a custom driveshaft spinning a stout Ford 9-inch rear full of 3.00 gears, so you don’t have to worry about breakage and it’s plenty punchy around town. The front suspension is a familiar upper and lower control arm setup with coil-overs and rack-and-pinion steering (another nice upgrade) while the rear hangs on simple leaf springs that ride well and don’t need any maintenance. Exhaust is by Flowmaster, with a great hot rod sound that doesn’t drone at speed. You’ll also note a custom reinforced frame that’s a rock solid platform and power front disc brakes to lock it down. Chrome wheels look right and carry staggered 205/65/15 front and 235/70/15 rear blackwall radials that give the car an awesome rake.

This car is titled as a 1934 Ford.

This subtle but well-built coupe quickly endeared itself to us simply because it gets everything right. A great look, comfortable interior, all the features you want in a modern rod (overdrive, A/C, power accessories, a great stereo) and none of the vices (it will never rust!). You couldn’t come close to building a ride like this for the asking price, making it one heck of a bargain for a fully-sorted coupe that’s ready to rock.
