Ford’s 3-window coupes were born sleek and it shouldn’t a surprise that they have been a favorite of customizers and street rodders for more than 70 years. Compact without being small, sleek and rounded without looking plump, and comfortable enough to be used as real cars, they’re always a smart choice if you want to stand out while heading down the road. With a bit of a chopped top, this bright red 1935 Ford 3-window coupe has that quintessential hot rod look. It’s still very much a ’35 Ford, but the design has been tweaked and streamlined a bit to create something unique. It’s worth noting that everything but the front fenders is Henry Ford steel, so the car feels solid going down the road and isn’t some fiberglass replica of the real thing. The build is probably 10 years old at this point, so it shows some minor signs of use, but the bright red paint shines up quite nicely, panel fit is excellent considering the significant amount of work required for that roofline, and it’s obvious that a lot of time and effort went into it. All the beautiful Ford moldings were retained and the traditional shape of the fenders, hood, and trunk lid are still very much as the original designers intended—can you really improve on it? There’s even a fabric roof insert to add a bit of vintage authenticity. The hood is a custom piece with three rows of louvers for cooling and the headlights are from a different car, although they work rather well here on the Ford. Bumpers have been shaved but the rear roll pan is seamless and highlights the LED ’39 Ford taillights. A few bits of chrome, including the grille, hood ornament, and windshield frame add a bit of ‘30s style.
The intent with the black bucket seat interior was to update the car without erasing what it was. That means an original steering column and wheel were somehow grafted onto the modern rack-and-pinion setup and low-back buckets keep the vintage vibe. A full array of gauges from Classic Instruments have a vintage look and even things like the headlight knob and starter button are vintage 1930s pieces. There’s a custom accelerator pedal that somewhat mimics the Ford’s original “spoon” style pedal and neatly tailored carpets give it a finished look. A Lokar floor shifter manages the AOD 4-speed automatic transmission and even in the compact coupe, there’s plenty of stretch-out space even for taller drivers. Also note that they trimmed the window garnish moldings to fit the new chopped profile, a nice detail that a lot of guys overlook. There’s also a professionally finished trunk with beautiful sheetmetal work, gas tank filler, and Optima battery.
It’s kind of a relief to see a Ford powerplant in a Ford car—in this case, it’s a fuel injected 5.0 liter V8 from a late-model Mustang. In fact, a lot of this car is Mustang underneath, giving it a familiar and competent feel on the road. It barks to life quickly and easily thanks to modern EFI and settles into an idle with that vaguely familiar Mustang soundtrack. There’s plenty of torque on tap, which is what the 5.0 is famous for, and the OEM engineering means that this car will be easy to service and inexpensive to maintain for many years to come. And while it’s largely stock if you want more power, it’s just a phone call away. Underneath, the stock frame was modified with a custom front crossmember that incorporates the Mustang’s power rack-and-pinion steering, upper and lower A-arms, and power front disc brakes. The AOD automatic transmission features a tall overdrive gear for easy highway cruising and there are modest gears out back to keep it from feeling too high-strung. You’ll note the frame has been extensively reinforced and upgraded with custom cross-members, as well as a 4-link rear suspension with coil-over shocks. The exhaust system has a nice rumble but it stays quiet when you just want to cruise. Chrome wheels with baby moon hubcaps are a traditional hot rod look and it sits on staggered 185R15 front and 195/75/15 rear wide whitewall radials for just the right touch.
This is one of those cool rods you couldn’t build for the asking price. It has all the features you want, including a steel body, fuel injection, overdrive, power steering, and a comfortable interior. And you just can’t beat that sleek, low look of a chopped 3-window coupe. Look at the pictures, look again at the price, then give us a call.
